While putting together this website, I had to balance between features and ease of use. As an example, the Search Form provides 7 different field options to provide maximum searching capabilities. At the same time, it may make the Search Form appear intimidating to use. If you have any questions on how to use any of the features, do not hesitate to ask. Send me a question with your email and I will be glad to provide screenshots of how you may search for that info.

Thank you for the feedback you have provided thus far. Changes have been made to the site based on your suggestions and since this site is for you, the paddlers and canoe clubs, all comments are greatly appreciated.

Currently, OC-6 athlete's names and first names for Rhino Ka'iwi Channel Relay for 2006, 2007 info are still being sought.

About This Site

PaddlingData.com started as a personal project in an attempt to bridge data from selected international paddling events, most notably, the Moloka'i to O'ahu crossings. This process involved 'normalizing' results from all the races so names are spelled consistently. In some races, such as the 2006 and 2007 Rhino Ka'iwi Channel Relay, first names were missing so some data could not be matched with the athlete from other races. See Site Notes for more of these boring details if you want. A very basic graph model was used for all graphing presentations to simplify the website.

The motivation for creating PaddlingData.com...

  • recognize the accomplishments of athletes that have completed the arduous journey across the Ka'iwi channel and other international caliber events
  • to help promote the hawai'ian sport of outrigger canoe paddling as well as recognizing local athletes competing abroad
  • allow athletes, teams, and canoe clubs to view their performance over time in these competitive events
  • and maintain a searchable repository of historical data for canoe clubs, sports writers, and anyone else with a passion for paddling

PaddlingData.com does not provide any "official" race results. Data was compiled from various sources/media outlets and "normalized" in a way that allows for better comprehensive search results of club's and athlete's race profile and performance.

Moloka'i Hoe: 1952 to 2009

  • Incomplete list of crew/club names, division (open glass, masters, koa etc.) from 1954 to 1995
  • Incomplete list of names of team members

Na Wahine O Ke Kai: 1979 to 2009

  • Race called off in 1980 due to extreme weather conditions
  • Incomplete list of division (open glass, masters, koa etc.) from 1979 to 1990, 1992
  • Incomplete list of names of team members

Moloka'i World Championships: 1999 to 2009

  • All race entrants entered as 'Open' division in 2002, 2003

Rhino Ka'iwi Channel Relay: 2002 to 2009

  • No data available for race entrants FIRST names in 2006, 2007 - manually filled-in on highly probable matches

PA'A Ka'iwi Channel Solo: 2008 to 2009

Dubai Shamaal: 2006 to 2009

  • No division data in 2006 to 2008

AOCRA National OC1/OC2 Marathon Titles: 2009

  • DNA - Data Not Available
  • DNF - Did Not Finish
  • 999 - a value given to the placing when race entrant information is incomplete
  • NFT - No Finish Time
  • DQ - DisQualified
  • SS1 - SurfSki - one person
  • SS2 - SurfSki - two person team
  • M2 - OC-2 Male Team
  • F2 - OC-2 Female Team
  • J - gender Junior (under 18) crew
  • U - gender information Unknown
  • X - gender Mixed crew
